A courtyard is one of the most underutilized and neglected areas of a healthcare facility and yet represents one of the best and most cost-effective opportunities to enhance the experience of the residents, patients, and visitors. The “Living Courtyards” at Hendricks Regional Health Hospital in Danville, Indiana are designed as healing spaces that provide distractions to reduce stress. HRH puts a high value on large amounts of sunlight and fresh air as being an important part of the healing process.
Wurster Construction was fortunate to receive an invite from HRH to reconstruct five of these courtyard spaces. The Pediatrics Courtyard design features include playground equipment and soft play surfaces. The Garden Courtyard includes wood plant structures for “live” annuals, trees, pathways, benches, and patio chairs and tables. Two Chapel Gardens and an East Courtyard with a fire pit available for evening use, round out these newly reconstructed areas
